Roman Britain and Early England 55 B. C. to A. D. 871
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (October, 1966)
Authors: Peter Blair, Hunter Blair, and Peter Hunter Blair
Average review score:

Very good overview of early English history.
Simply put, I agree with the other reviewers, in that this is a readable, good introduction to the history of England. The author did seem to have made certain assumptions about the reader's familiarity with the geography of England, i.e. place names, etc. There were a few maps that shed quite a bit of light on the location of places and peoples, but I had to search them out. A few more maps, and descriptive maps that illustrated the movement of troops, tribes or progression of battles would have added so much to this book. A good companion, from the Roman history point of view, is the Penguin Illustrated Atlas of Ancient Rome, which covers Caesar's and later Rome's experiences in England.

A readable, informative history of early England
Peter Blair provides an understandable account of early England during the Roman occupation and subsequent Anglo-Saxon era. Early in the book Blair makes it clear historical written information about this period is quite limited, particularly after the Roman occupation. However, with sources such as Bede's Ecclesiastical History of England, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and poems such as Beowulf, Blair paints a fairly detailed picture of England from 55 BC to AD 871. I found the book to be quite readable even for someone with limited prior knowledge of the period.

Blair is an expert in his field.
Blair is an expert in his field and covers the material of Roman Britian and Anglo-Saxon England very well. For an area of history that relatively little is known about, Blair creates a clear and full picture of life and politics of this time. Writing this book after Blair was already established in his field, "Roman Britian and Anglo-Saxon England, 55 BC to 871 AD", is easy to follow. However, a general understanding or rudementary backround of the subject is helpful. Blair is quick to state the ambiquity of the sources and evidence surviving from the time period which only increases his repute as an accomplished historian. This book is highly recommended for anyone wishing to take a serious look at Roman Britian and Anglo-Saxon England with the security of knowing it is from a trusted source.

Spanish Power-Glide Foreign Language Courses : The Adventure Begins (Spanish Complete Course)
Published in Textbook Binding by Power-Glide Foreign Language Courses (October, 1998)
Authors: Dr. Robert Blair, Ingrid Kellmer, and Apryl Robertson
Average review score:

Good, Comprehensive Program
Power Glide is a comprehensive Language program. There's a mystery story throughout the program, which gives clues on speaking the language. Much of it you must figure out yourself, but that only makes you retain it better. The only thing I didn't like is every few chapters, they go off in a different direction and it's kind of frustrating, but I wouldn't let that stop me from buying the program. It's one of the better Language programs I've seen.

Highly Recommended
First rate. This is a very effective language-learning tool, practical and without a lot of the distracting and irrelevant nonsense that irritates me, at least, in many other such products that I've examined.

Un libro magnifico!
He usado la mitad de este libro y ya puedo hablar espanol bastante bien. Es la verdad! This is an excellent Spanish course that uses the newest innovations in foreign language instruction combined with an exciting format to make Spanish possible, even for people who have difficulty learning languages. More than that, it has given me the confidence I will need to become proficient. I highly recommend this text.

Visits With Violet: How to Be Happy for 100 Years
Published in Hardcover by Peak Press (01 September, 1999)
Author: Blair Justice
Average review score:

Interesting history and some funny stories
I must first admit that I am a bit biased (Violet is my great grandmother). Having said that, the book is good, not great. There are many stories throughout the book which do have an interesting historical perspective of things. Having lived through this entire century and having a better memory than most anyone I have ever known (she is still razor sharp on recalling events back when she was 4 or 5) she is able to talk vividly about how different situations affected the average American back in the twenties, the great depression, and many other events during this century. Give it a look if you see it in the book store. Definitely worth at least a curiosity glance.

Emotional Intelligence in Old Age
I found this an exceptionally moving memoir, first for the story of Violet, and second for the narrator's own personal journey. Because the reader can identify with the narrator's vulnerability, one feels even more receptive to the wisdom imparted by Violet. Violet is a homespun sage who has made the most of her varied experiences to love life. At heart, the book asks the question, how can we love life in the midst of deep pain? I was touched by the narrator's honesty and informed by the insights about relationships, aging, and just plain coping. The book is also a picture of an earlier time with lessons to be drawn for our own, heartwarming and at the same time profound.

Lessons in living a happy life
This is an inspiring book about a "lady" and how she has coped with life's trials and tribulations during her 100 years of life. In contrast, it is also an insightful memoir of the author and how he has dealt with and attempted to overcome similar situations. His admiration for his subject is revealed as he tries to learn what has kept Violet a happy, go with the flow kind of person all of her life. Violet's story has brought to light some lessons for life that can be used by everyone. Unquestionably a good read.

Arts and Crafts Furniture: Projects You Can Build for the Home (Woodworker's Library (Fresno, Calif.).)
Published in Paperback by Linden Publishing (January, 2000)
Author: Blair Howard
Average review score:

Woodworker's Primer on Arts & Crafts
This is a nice presentation of fifteen projects in the Arts & Crafts style. Designed from pictures in old catalogs, the problems in construction are solved by Blair Howard as he guides you through each project. The first chapters deal with the designers, their furniture, construction techniques, finish techniques, and materials. The remaining chapters are devoted to the actual pieces. Accomplished woodworkers might find the detailed instructions excessive, but beginners will appreciate the explanations. An excellent beginner's book for Arts & Crafts reproduction at home, with a few designs not seen elsewhere.

An informative and detailed book of projects
I enjoyed Blair Howard's writing style and as a beginning woodworker, appreaciated his completeness and that he went over the techniques he used for every single project, rather than leaving it up to the reader to decide which techniques to use. The book focuses a lot on mortise+tenon joinery, which I appreciate, and does go over the various ways of creating mortises and tenons with machines, though it does not do any more than mention how one would go about making mortises and tenons with hand tools. The projects are rather unique and I am interested in making virtually every one. I appreciated the variety of designers, instead of only presenting Stickley pieces.

The Blair Handbook

SPLICES, ANTECEDENTS ETC.
THE BLAIR HANDBOOK IS MUST HAVE FOR WRITING PERFECT ENGLISH. NO HOUSE, LIBRARY, OR EVEN STUDENT SHOULD BE WITHOUT THIS TEXT. EVER WONDER WHY IT IS THAT 'THE ROAD WINDS AROUND THE MOUNTAIN.' INSTEAD OF 'THE ROADS WINDS AROUND THE MOUNTAIN'? WELL NOW YOU CAN FIND OUT, NOT JUST BECAUSE IT DOESN'T SOUND RIGHT, BUT THE REASON IT ISN'T CORRECT. THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT YOU WILL WRIET AND THEN SECOND GUESS THEM, AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THEY ARE CORRECT. WITH THIS BOOK YOU CAN FIND OUT WHAT IS CORRECT AND BRING YOUR WRITING UP TO A HIGHER LEVEL. USE THE TIPS AND LESSONS TO WRITE IMPRESSIVE RESUMES, PAPERS, THESES ETC. A MUST FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN WRITING EXCEPTIONALLY WELL.

A Student's Book
This book is perfect for any student of writing, wether enrolled in a university or not. It guides the reader through every stage of the writing process: planning, drafting, researching, revising, editing. Each stage is examined very carefully; the book covers any and all aspects that are needed to get on board and start writing.

The unique features of this book are (1) helpful ESL boxes that offer important tips for international students, or for those that help international students, (2) Questions for analysis and useful assignments, both for individuals and groups, (3) a clear, exciting format that makes for easy, captivating reading, and (4) practical charts and helps for easy reference. The book can be read like a novel or used as a reference tool. The only problem is that, because of the size of the book, the softcover does not wear well. I would recommend buying hardcover.

I have always avoided writing; it never quite turns out the way I want. But this handbook, with its clear explanations and user-friendly tone, has inspired me to simply write, not letting burdens of worry slow me down. I have been encouraged to have fun exploring new ways of putting my fingers to the keyboard. This book is for anyone who is not a writer, or is, but wants to be one.

Fun for any Blair Witch Fan
We all know by now that "Big Daddy" is more along the lines of the current American intellect. But until the rest of the world catches up with the Blair With Project... Get this book. The Dance Book: 555 Ways To Ask, Answer, & Plan for Dances

Authors: Blair Tolman and Tristan Tolman

Fun ideas!
I read and used this book a number of times in high school when asking or answering for school dances. It has some fun ideas for things to do before and/after the dance as well.

I wish I'd have read this vook when I was a teen! :-)
Blair Tolman's "Dance Book" is a great resource for anyone who has teenagers! As a high school teacher I have given out numerous copies to my students who have come to me asking for ideas for Prom, Homecoming, Sadie Hawkins, etc. It is so much fun hearing the students' stories of how these ideas really worked!

Goddess in a Box
Published in Paperback by Fair Winds Press (June, 2002)
Author: Nancy Blair
Average review score:

I love my Goddess in a Box!
This packet comes with a small goddess statue that acts as an incense burner, 4 sticks of incense, and a very thick, small book of goddess affirmations - heavy on the Native American and more obscure goddesses. The box also turns into an altar. I have always been a big fan on Nancy Blair and really like this concept.

My only bias is that because it is a 365 day book of goddess, I wish all the major goddesses were representated. I agree that mentioning obscure goddess is important, but I think representing the core group is also valid. I would recommend this set to anyone.

A lovely kit.
This is truly a lovely kit containing mini incense sticks, a Goddess figurine (which can hold the incense), a workable altar, and a petite book which lists a Goddess and an inspirational paragraph relating to her and to using her energies in your life for each day of the year. I love day-by-day Goddess books; because I'd gone through my other ones, I was so happy to find a new one. I find the figurine and the meditations in the book truly beautiful, calming and inspirational. The kit is definitely worth five stars, but I do have a complaint: I find it too messy to actually use the incense with the Goddess figurine. She "holds" it upright, and although she has a little bowl to catch the ashes, it's so small that in reality the ashes scatter everywhere. Buyers of this kit might want to have a separate mini-incense burner to use, like I do (or just use incense of regular length separately).

A peek at the genius of Disney animation--Mickey Mouse genre
I was facinated as the artist/author gave me a glimpse into the style and technique that Walt Disney and his crew of animators developed to create Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, et al. It was really ground-breaking stuff in its day. Explained well; illustrated well.
